El Teniente, Chile

In 2016, Codelco awarded CPPE the contract for engineering design and specification, manufacture and supply of specialised equipment components of its SULFACID technology for two independent tail gas treatment plants for Codelco’s two their metallurgical acid plants at El Teniente, the world largest underground copper mine in Chile. Each process has been independently designed for the full range of inlet flows and SO2 concentrations, including the full peak start-up load.

The SOX removal rate for SRE1 is 21 800 t/y, and for SRE2 it is 24 300 t/y. The concentration of the sulfuric acid is 50 wt% and the project was completed in 2019.
